Modernising a Strategic Rail Connection in Western Portugal

Oeste Railway Line Modernisation – Mira Sintra-Meleças to Caldas da Rainha

Extending across 87 km of railway, the modernisation of the Oeste Line between Mira Sintra-Meleças and Caldas da Rainha brings together a wide range of interventions aimed at upgrading the corridor’s infrastructure. The project combines electrification and signalling with track duplication, station alterations, level-crossing removal and the rehabilitation and construction of railway structures.

A broad multidisciplinary intervention was required to address both the railway itself and the infrastructure surrounding it. The project includes electrification and catenary design, signalling, drainage, earthworks and the duplication of approximately 16 km of track, alongside the removal of 14 level crossings through new overpasses. The scope also covers the widening of six engineering structures, two new railway structures, retaining structures, slope stabilisation, tunnel rehabilitation, road reinstatements, station alterations, substations, affected utilities, fencing and expropriations. Quadrante’s engineering work focused on hydrology, platform drainage, railway and road structures, retaining structures, tunnel rehabilitation, road reinstatements, fencing and expropriations.

Upgrading 87 km of existing railway infrastructure required coordinating interventions across track, structures, drainage, tunnels, roads and stations while preparing the corridor for electrification and modern railway systems. The combination of track duplication and the removal of 14 level crossings with structural and infrastructure improvements provides the engineering basis for a more modern railway connection between the Lisbon metropolitan area and Caldas da Rainha.
