Transforming Urban Mobility in Maputo

Maputo Urban Mobility Project – BRT

A new high-capacity public transport corridor was designed to improve mobility across Maputo and help relieve congestion on some of the city’s main arteries. Phase 1 of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system extends for 16.5 km, connecting Praça dos Trabalhadores with Magoanine and incorporating a secondary corridor terminating at the Natural History Museum. Integrated primarily within existing avenues, the system was conceived as the first stage of a wider BRT network for the city.

Designing the BRT corridor within Maputo’s existing urban fabric required the coordinated development of transport, road, building and supporting infrastructure. Quadrante was responsible for the coordination and delivery of the Preliminary, Basic and Detailed Design stages, covering the disciplines associated with the road infrastructure, 16 stations, four terminals and a parking and maintenance depot. The multidisciplinary scope addressed both the BRT alignment and the buildings and infrastructure required for its operation.

Introducing a dedicated BRT system provides Maputo with the basis for a more efficient and structured public transport network. By integrating the new corridor into existing avenues and coordinating stations, terminals, road infrastructure and operational facilities as a single system, the project was designed to improve urban mobility and contribute to reducing congestion along key routes across the city.
