Engineering Barcelona’s Metro Above and Below Ground

Barcelona Metro Line 9 – Section 2N

Section 2N of Barcelona Metro Line 9 extends between Parc Logístic and Zona Universitària, forming part of one of the city’s major public transport infrastructure developments. The project comprises 12.36 km of double-track metro infrastructure, combining underground and elevated sections and requiring multiple construction methods to respond to the complexity of the urban environment.

Combining underground and elevated infrastructure, the Detailed Design and Environmental Impact Study developed by Meta Engineering, now operating as Quadrante Global , addressed the diverse technical conditions along Section 2N. The alignment includes approximately 5.87 km of tunnel excavated using a 12.06 m diameter TBM, 1.47 km using a 9.40 m TBM, 1.86 km of cut-and-cover tunnel, 469 m of mined tunnel and 2.7 km of elevated double track on viaduct. The project also comprises eight shaft-type stations with a diameter of 26 m, three elevated stations approximately 129 m long, and a new workshop and depot complex with 4.3 km of railway tracks and capacity for 20 trains.

Combining several tunnelling techniques with elevated infrastructure allowed the design to respond to the different technical and urban conditions along the 12.36 km corridor. The integration of tunnels, viaducts, underground and elevated stations, workshops and depot facilities resulted in a comprehensive metro solution designed to support the expansion of Barcelona’s public transport network.
