Connecting Renewable Energy Across Borders

Viento Fronterizo 500 kV Transmission Line

Spanning the US–Mexico border, the Viento Fronterizo project is a 20 km high-voltage transmission connection designed to link renewable energy resources in Mexico with the US electricity market. Operating at 500 kV, the infrastructure creates a cross-border pathway for renewable power while addressing the technical and regulatory requirements of two national energy systems.

Cross-border transmission requires engineering solutions that respond to different regulatory frameworks and technical standards on either side of the border. For Ignis, the scope covered the design and engineering of approximately 20 km of 500 kV overhead transmission lines, including coordination with the applicable international requirements and planning for the integration of renewable generation into the interconnected grid.

A new high-capacity electricity corridor between Mexico and the United States can expand the infrastructure available to connect renewable generation with cross-border energy markets. The Viento Fronterizo transmission line combines 500 kV engineering with international regulatory and technical coordination, supporting the movement of renewable electricity between the two countries and contributing to greater regional grid integration.
