Engineering Urban Resilience Against Flooding

Tumbes and Pueblo Nuevo Urban Stormwater Drainage System

In northern Peru, the Tumbes and Pueblo Nuevo Urban Stormwater Drainage Project aims to reduce flood risks and strengthen urban resilience against intense rainfall and extreme weather events, including El Niño.

Covering approximately 34 km², the project will improve stormwater management through an integrated drainage network designed to protect infrastructure and enhance safety for nearly 60,000 residents.

The project comprises 18.9 km of drainage infrastructure across six intervention sectors, including collection networks, flow attenuation structures, temporary storage facilities and discharge systems. Three Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) complement the conventional infrastructure.

Developed by Consorcio DOME del Norte for Peru’s National Infrastructure Authority (ANIN), the engineering scope covers RIBA Stages 3 and 4, integrating hydraulic and hydrological modelling, multidisciplinary design and BIM coordination to optimise technical solutions and constructability.
