Powering the Way for Portugal’s High-Speed Rail

Porto–Oiã High-Speed Railway – High-Voltage Line Repositioning

Portugal’s new high-speed railway is set to transform national mobility, significantly reducing rail travel times between Porto and Lisbon while preparing the network for future connections with Spain. The Porto–Oiã section forms the first phase of this strategic infrastructure programme, combining faster passenger mobility with wider ambitions for transport decarbonisation, modal shift and more efficient freight operations.

Integrating a new high-speed railway corridor with existing energy infrastructure requires the careful adaptation of utilities affected by its alignment. Quadrante is responsible for the repositioning of existing high-voltage overhead lines impacted by the Porto–Oiã section, developing the detailed design and supporting the associated rights-of-way and licensing process preparation. The intervention ensures that the affected electrical infrastructure is coordinated with the requirements of the new railway corridor.

Adapting the high-voltage network is one of the enabling interventions required to accommodate the new railway infrastructure along the Porto–Oiã corridor. By redesigning the affected overhead lines and preparing the necessary land and licensing processes, Quadrante is helping coordinate two critical infrastructure networks as Portugal advances a transport programme focused on modal shift, lower greenhouse gas emissions and improved rail connectivity.
