Connecting Hybrid Renewable Generation to the Grid

Merengue II 220/30 kV Substation

The Merengue II substation provides the electrical infrastructure required to evacuate power from a hybrid renewable energy development combining the 50 MW Merengue Wind Farm with a 25 MW photovoltaic plant in Extremadura, Spain. The project supports the integration of complementary wind and solar generation through a dedicated 220/30 kV substation.

Bringing 75 MW of wind and solar generation into a common grid connection required a dedicated 220/30 kV substation solution. Izharia, now operating as Quadrante Global, developed the detailed construction engineering for Merengue II. Designed as a 220 kV outdoor facility with 30 kV indoor switchgear and a single-busbar configuration, the substation comprises one line bay and two 220/30 kV transformer bays. The engineering scope covered earthworks, civil works and steel structures, electromechanical assembly, protection, control and metering systems, and auxiliary services.
