Connecting Communities Through Regional Water Infrastructure

El Peñón–Ovalle Water Supply System

The El Peñón–Ovalle Water Supply System was designed to transfer water across Chile’s Coquimbo Region, linking the El Peñón intake in the municipality of Coquimbo with Los Peñones in Ovalle. The project addressed a major regional conveyance challenge.

The proposed system comprised approximately 70 km of pipelines, divided between 30 km of pumped conveyance and 40 km of gravity conveyance, with a design flow of 800 l/s. It also included two pumping stations, a balancing tank and operating and safety equipment. The engineering scope covered preliminary and detailed design, site reconnaissance, geotechnics, architecture, hydraulics, structures, mechanical and electrical systems, and technical documentation for construction permits.
