Planning for Fast-Growing Electricity Demand in Virginia

Dominion Energy – Load Hosting Capacity Studies

Virginia is experiencing some of the fastest electricity demand growth in the United States, and utilities need to know quickly and reliably where the transmission system can accommodate new large loads. For Dominion Energy, Quadrante Right Analytics is advancing a Hosting Capacity Analysis (HCA) tool that evaluates how much additional load can be connected across the Dominion Energy Virginia service territory.

Building on the tool developed in earlier phases, the current work delivers a set of targeted enhancements across its Proportional Scaling, Concurrent Loading and SCRD modules. These include alignment with PJM’s latest N-1-1 study requirements, automatic headroom updates, combined bus and line tapping, load power-factor modeling, quantification of each new load’s contribution to thermal violations, ranking of the most limiting thermal constraints and completion of the AC voltage study module, supported by user training materials.

Faster, more flexible hosting capacity assessments help planners respond to new load requests with confidence and target grid upgrades where they deliver the most value. The enhanced tool gives Dominion Energy a system-wide view of available capacity and limiting constraints, supporting better-informed decisions on load integration and future transmission investment.
