Engineering Resilience into Madeira’s Digital Infrastructure

Data Center Virtudes

Critical digital infrastructure demands resilience from the earliest design decisions. Located in Funchal, the EMACOM Data Center Virtudes – Phase 1 was developed to meet demanding requirements for reliability and operational continuity, bringing together multiple specialised engineering disciplines within a highly coordinated design process. The project achieved Tier III Certification of Design Documents from Uptime Institute, providing independent international validation of its design.

Achieving Tier III certification required resilience and maintainability to be embedded into the engineering from the outset. Developed end to end by Quadrante, the project brought together power, cooling, monitoring, automation and other engineering disciplines through an iterative certification process. The Tier III design approach ensures concurrent maintainability, allowing planned maintenance or replacement of infrastructure components without impacting critical operations.

Tier III Certification of Design Documents represents more than a project milestone: it confirms that resilience has been integrated into the data center’s engineering before construction. For EMACOM, the certification validates a design conceived to maintain critical operations during planned infrastructure maintenance, while the end-to-end process strengthens the technical foundations for reliable digital infrastructure in Madeira.
