Turning Circular Economy Research into Action

Circular Value Chains Analysis

How can collaboration help transform linear value chains into circular ones? Developed for the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, the Circular Value Chains Analysis examined 29 real-world cases across eight sectors to understand how business models, partnerships and governance can support the transition towards more circular and resilient European value chains. The study was conducted by Norion, Ricardo and 3drivers, a Quadrante Group company.

Conducted by Norion, Ricardo and 3drivers Quadrante, the study covered textiles, plastics, construction and buildings, vehicles, electronics, furniture, road construction and renewable energy. A common analytical framework explored how circular business models are shaped by collaboration across value chains, including partnerships, reverse logistics, governance arrangements and strategies to retain the value of products and materials. The research was complemented by practical policy resources designed to support the development of circular economy instruments at regional, national and EU levels.

Turning research into practical decision-making tools was at the heart of 3drivers’ contribution. As a Quadrante Group company specialising in sustainability and circular economy, 3drivers developed a toolbox for assessing circular maturity at company, sector and regional levels, helping users understand their current position, identify barriers and define opportunities to advance circularity.

The methodology extended the value of the research beyond the individual case studies, providing companies, sectors, regions and policymakers with a practical approach to assess circular maturity and identify priorities for action.
