Reinforcing Andalusia’s Grid for the Energy Transition

Carmona–Don Rodrigo and Guillena–Don Rodrigo 400 kV Transmission Lines

The reinforcement of the Carmona–Don Rodrigo and Guillena–Don Rodrigo 400 kV overhead transmission lines forms part of Spain’s 2021–2026 electricity transmission network development plan. Located in Seville, the project is designed to strengthen the Andalusian grid, support the integration of renewable generation and help resolve technical constraints within the regional transmission network.

The project covers the repowering of two 400 kV double-circuit, duplex overhead transmission lines: the 72.3 km Guillena–Don Rodrigo line and the 41.3 km Carmona–Don Rodrigo line. The intervention includes increasing the height of selected existing towers while maintaining both the current alignment and tower locations. At four specific towers — T-88B, T-109B, T-115B and T-143B — the existing suspension strings will be replaced with suspended tension strings, allowing the conductors to be raised without increasing tower height.

Upgrading more than 113 km of existing 400 kV transmission infrastructure strengthens the capacity of Andalusia’s electricity network while making use of established transmission corridors. By adapting existing towers and conductors without changing the lines’ routes or tower locations, the project supports greater renewable energy integration and helps address technical constraints identified within the regional grid.
