Strengthening Island Energy Resilience with Battery Storage

BESS Energy Storage Systems – Menorca and Ibiza

New battery energy storage systems in Menorca and Ibiza are strengthening the resilience of the Balearic Islands’ electricity infrastructure while supporting their transition towards greater renewable energy integration. Developed for Elecnor, the project introduces large-scale BESS installations at the Es Mercadal and San Antonio substations, providing a combined 140 MW of power and 105 MWh of energy storage capacity.

Two large-scale battery installations required detailed engineering tailored to the different grid conditions of Menorca and Ibiza. Izharia, now operating as Quadrante Global, developed the engineering for both BESS installations and their integration with the existing electricity infrastructure. In Menorca, the system is located adjacent to the 132 kV Es Mercadal substation and provides 50 MW of power and 37.5 MWh of storage capacity. In Ibiza, the BESS connected to the 66 kV San Antonio substation provides 90 MW and 67.5 MWh. Both interconnections include nearby Red Eléctrica de España (REE) substations and modular operation and maintenance buildings.
