The Largest Solar Power Plant in Portugal: A Milestone for Sustainability and Energy Transition

Rio Maior and Torre Bela Solar Photovoltaic Plant

Herdade da Torre Bela, in Azambuja, hosted the largest photovoltaic solar power plant built in Portugal, with an installed capacity of 272 MWp and capable of supplying 110,000 homes.

The solar park consists of two PV Plants side by side: the Torre Bela plant (68 MWp) and the Rio Maior plant (204 MWp).

The solar park uses bifacial modules and tracking structures to harness solar energy to generate electricity. The construction also took into account biodiversity preservation, namely more than 6,000 cork oaks, and the solar park integration with the natural landscape.

The solar park will be built in plots with an average size of 20 hectares, separated by green corridors to improve connections between almost 200 hectares of biodiversity protection areas.
