Sustainability underway

Kwanza River Basin

To take advantage of the Kwanza River‘s privileged conditions and to improve efficient management of water resources in Angola, the General Plan for the Development and Use of Water Resources (PGDURH) was launched.

This plan covers an area of 151,000 km² and aims to guarantee water supply for the entire population, prevent and mitigate the effects of floods, droughts and pollution, ensure the availability of water for different socio-economic sectors, recover the quality of surface and groundwater and prevent their degradation.

The Kwanza River, with its impressive 960 km, is the longest river in Angola with the largest hydroelectric potential, estimated at 7,000 MW with only 610 MW currently installed. This scenario shows all the potential for sustainable development and conscious use of natural resources.
