Quadrante, a company providing architecture and engineering consulting services, will be responsible for essential infrastructure in the new Hospital Lisboa Oriental, a project led by the Mota-Engil consortium, which began construction last Monday.
In a press release, Quadrante states that it has been contracted to develop projects in the areas of structures and foundations, water supply and fire protection networks, wastewater and rainwater collection networks, fuel gas network, electrical distribution network, telecommunications network, road infrastructure and outdoor facilities, earthworks design, traffic consulting, acoustics, and the heliport.
“The Hospital Lisboa Oriental is one of the most emblematic projects of the past few decades for the city of Lisbon and for Portugal. This is a long-term commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the well-being of future generations,” said Nuno Costa, CEO of the Quadrante group, as quoted in the statement.
He added that Quadrante’s role in the project will be to “ensure that this infrastructure delivers maximum operational efficiency, seismic safety, and working conditions that honour both the users and professionals who will work there.”
Located in Marvila, the new Hospital Lisboa Oriental will take over most of the operations of the Lisbon Central University Hospital Centre, which currently includes six units – São José, Santa Marta, Dona Estefânia, Curry Cabral, Santo António dos Capuchos, and Alfredo da Costa Maternity Hospital.
With a gross area of 180,000 square meters, spread across three plots of land, the three interconnected buildings may include both underground and aerial links, as the hospital is expected to have a heliport, the company added.
Although the initial capacity will be 875 beds, the infrastructure will be prepared to expand up to 1,075 beds during contingency situations, without requiring additional construction work.
Regarding parking, the hospital will offer 2,945 parking spaces, with at least 1,450 located in an underground car park.
Quadrante also recently announced the strategic acquisition of the Spanish group Meta Engineering, doubling its size. Following this integration, the new group expects to achieve revenues exceeding 100 million euros in 2024 and employ around 1,100 people.
