Engineering consultancy Quadrante has acquired the Catalan group Inprocess, which specialises in virtual simulators for companies linked to the oil and chemical industries. The Portuguese company announced on Thursday the strategic integration of the Spanish firm in order to expand its portfolio of so-called “digital twins”, which function as replicas of factories or offshore platforms used for oil extraction.

Quadrante opted for an acquisition under a stand-alone model (independent operation) to allow Inprocess to retain its headquarters in Barcelona, as well as its brand, management and executive team — led by CEO Oriol Millán — and its day-to-day operations unchanged. In fact, Quadrante’s digital twins division will be integrated into Inprocess in order to centralise the offering there.

The goal is to ensure continuity in project execution and in relationships with Inprocess’ current clients while simultaneously expanding Quadrante’s reach in sectors such as energy and process engineering, which includes oil and gas, midstream (transport and storage), refining, petrochemicals, fertilisers, green hydrogen and carbon capture.

“A key pillar of the agreement is the reinvestment of Inprocess’ current shareholders, who will become shareholders in Quadrante. This measure ensures direct and mutual alignment with the group’s financial and operational objectives, fostering synergies and faster growth without compromising Inprocess’ positioning or value proposition,” Quadrante said.

According to Quadrante’s CEO, the Catalan company’s expertise in process simulation and digital twins “strengthens a key capability” and fits within the strategy of continuing to reinforce the services of the group headquartered in Alfragide. “It is also an opportunity to take a step forward in scale and positioning for Quadrante as a stronger global company, with the ability to support its clients with innovative digital solutions that genuinely impact the efficiency, productivity, safety and sustainability of their operations,” said Nuno Costa in a statement.

Barcelona group to expand and pursue “selective acquisitions”

The group Inprocess – Technology and Consulting has been developing process simulation and Process Digital Twins for the oil industry since 2006. Under this agreement, the plan is to grow the company’s size by three to five times within a three-to-four-year timeframe through a combination of two factors: international expansion and a strategy of selective acquisitions.

Currently, Inprocess has a team of 165 employees, mostly chemical engineers, and operates from offices in Barcelona (Spain), Houston (United States), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Pune (India). In 2025, it recorded revenues of more than €15 million from business with clients such as Chevron, Exxon, Repsol, BP, ENI and Petronas.

“This partnership allows us to enter a new phase of growth with greater capacity and reach, without giving up the close service that defines us,” said the CEO of Inprocess. Oriol Millán said he shares “the confidence and vision” with Quadrante and that “its international platform and experience” provide the “necessary momentum to accelerate expansion” and deliver “more integrated solutions, from project design to operational optimisation.”

Quadrante’s acquisition, the value of which was not disclosed, is part of the group’s international growth plan and follows the purchase of Meta Engineering and Izharia in Spain in 2024 and, more recently, Right Analytics in the United States.

Last year, Quadrante recorded revenues of nearly €125 million. In addition to Portugal, Spain and the United States, the group is present in Romania and carries out activities in Africa, Mexico and South America (Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Panama).
